It’s Friday night. Mr. “Square”, our “professional bettor” realizes, after watching an episode of his favorite soap opera or talk-show on TV, and after enjoying the “week’s work is done, tomorrow I can sleep in” feeling thoroughly, that Sunday’s games are drawing near and it would be high-time for some in-depth handicapping before placing his bets. He, of course, is not a sucker. He takes his time to thoroughly handicap each and every team, going through last week’s injured lists, checking out the latest winning or losing streaks the teams have been on, taking just an itsy bitsy bit of time out every now and then to go and raid the fridge, make an important phone-call or just behold the birdies out in the garden and let his thoughts fly.
On Sunday night, before the games Mr. Square feels like “this is it”. He’s sure to make it big this time, after all he’s done his homework just right, hasn’t he?
When the games are over Mr. Square is quiet. He feels cheated. He hit 35-40% on Sunday’s games. All despite the thorough handicapping he’d done. Something must be wrong. The games might have been fixed, the umpire might have taken sides…. Those damn players always seem to run out of steam just when they should be scoring like crazy…
However, what Mr. Square doesn’t realize is that he is not smarter than everybody else. He’s just the regular dime-a-dozen part-time handicapper with unrealistically high expectations and get-rich-quick dreams.
For a little bit of profit optimization , Mr. Square would need 3 things: Time, Time and a little more Time on top of that. And patience, and a well thought out handicapping schedule.. wait, that’s already 4 , no make that 5 things. Top that with a little bit of luck and you have a person who can generate a steady revenue from gambling. A real pro if you care to call him that.
Handicapping should start on Monday and last till placing the bets for Sunday’s game. Mr. Square would need to take the time to read detailed game reports of each and every game played the previous week, pay attention to individual player’s performances under different circumstances. He should then study trends, paying special attention to turnovers. He should also see what the coach and players had to say, study their quotes, to get a general idea of the state of mind the team is in . These quotes might also give the expert a valuable hint towards the next game’s outcome.
On Friday all the expert handicapper is left with to do is check last minute injuries and odds.
After nailing down the last details he should watch as many games as possible during the weekend as nothing is as valuable from the handicapper’s point of view then actually seeing the events unfold, instead of just reading a report later.
If he manages to take the time, stick to a tight schedule, and generally speaking just put some heart into it, Mr. Square might just end up Mr. Sharp by the end of the week , and stop blaming his losses on all sorts of imaginary factors that have really nothing to do with the outcome of any one game.
